5 Writing Prompts To Jump-start Your Next Session
Most professional writers will agree that if you’re working toward a career in the industry, it begins with nurturing daily habits. Whether you’re looking to start a new project or taking a break from here are five writing prompts to get you started. Each one is for a different genre so hopefully there's at least one that gives you some ideas.
#1 Horror
Leona checked her watch, then glanced over at her twin sister’s dead body. An eerie stillness hung in the air of the cabin as the seconds ticked by. Angela had put up quite the fight, but Leona was stronger… faster. The corps’s eyelids fluttered open and Angela sucked in a pained breath as she sat up.
“Took you long enough.” Leona knelt next to Angela, handing her a glass of water.
“You killed me.” Angela clutched her chest, tears rushing to her eyes. “I was dead…”
“Don’t be so dramatic.” Leona groaned. “You were being stubborn and one of us needed to do the practical thing.”
#2 YA Sci-Fi
Selena washed the blue liquid off her hands, trying not to tremble.
“You’re a doctor, Mom...” Frankie wiped his eyes. “You have to do something.”
“I’m a veterinarian, sweetheart.” Selena swallowed hard. “And whatever this thing is…”
“She’s not a thing, Mom.” Frankie glared at his mother. “She’s a person and she’s my best friend. She’s just… not from here.”
#3 Dark Fantasy Romance
My husband let out a loud, boisterous laugh as he slapped the servant girl on her backside. She flinched, color rushing to her cheeks as she filled his goblet with wine. When her eyes met mine, I knew in that single glance that she hated him as much as I did. But there was much I didn’t know… Like how our fates had been intertwined since the day I was forced to marry the cruel Dragon King, or that this quiet servant girl was actually a spy sent by the Rebel Queen of the Fae, and I was destined to fall in love with her.
#4 Mystery
“Five men have gone missing at this facility in the last five weeks, Mr. Brown.” I narrowed my eyes at him. “I’d say that’s more than a little trouble.”
“No one escapes from Fontain Asylum, Miss Ellis.” A thin smile twitched at the edges of his lips.
“I didn’t say they escaped.” I turned to look out the window at the vast expanse of woodland beyond the twenty-foot brick wall. “I said they went missing. The board members, your employers, hired me to find out what happened to them. And that’s exactly what I intend to do.”
#5 Comedy
It’s been a month since my dog, Buster was attacked by something in the woods behind our house. At first we were afraid he wouldn’t make it, but he pulled through. What I didn’t expect was that the next full moon would transform him into a human. Apparently if a were-wolf bites a dog, it turns them into a... were-human? Now I have to explain to my parents who this dude eating all our pop-tarts is. I don’t think they’re going to believe me if I tell them the truth.
